Is Your Hair Color Aging You?

The wrong hair color can make you look older. If you've been the same shade for decades, it's time to make a change.

Does your hair color make you look older? The color of your eyes and skin are an important consideration when choosing a hair color. Selecting the wrong hair color can add years to your real age, so it's important that you find a good colorist to help you select the color that is best for your skin tone and eye color.
There are many hair color options available, depending on your skin tone.
  • Neutral or cream-color skin tones: Helga Surratt, president of About Faces Day Spa & Salon in Towson, Md., suggests that people with dark eyes stick with medium brown colors or medium reds. If you have hazel, blue, or green eyes, she says that anything from a light brunette to a medium blonde would look great. And, if your natural hair color is light, go with an auburn or strawberry color.
  • Warm/ruddy skin tones: If your eyes are dark brown, black, or hazel color, Surratt suggests that you go with black, medium brown, or golden brown hair. A wine or auburn color would enhance your natural color. If your eyes are hazel, blue, or green and your natural hair color is light brown to medium blonde, add light or golden highlights or choose a medium brunette color on the warm side. If your eyes are blue or green and you have naturally blonde hair, stay with golden blondes and very light brunette shades. Vivid red tones and warm reds will work well for you also.
  • Olive skin tones. If you have brown eyes, you should opt for dark brown or brunette shades. If your eyes are hazel, blue, or green, go with a light to medium brown, and Surratt says you should use a sandy brown to cover any gray. If your eyes are blue or green, chances are that you already have light hair naturally, and you can go light brunette or blonde.
  • Women of color: If your skin’s undertone color is warm, select colors that are a shade darker than your skin with a warm tone, such as a bronze or caramel color. Do not go too light gold, as you may wind up with orange hair. If your skin’s undertone is cool, stick with a light ash tone, burgundy or cool browns and avoid coppers, auburns, or any gold colors. Most women of color have brown eyes, but if your eyes are not brown, the guidelines above still apply.

    • Yellow tint or sallow skin tones. If you have dark or hazel eyes, you will look great with shades from black to medium brown. Auburn, wine, or aubergine also will accentuate your own natural coloring. If you have hazel, blue, or green eyes, light browns and medium blondes will look good. Keep the blondes on the ashy or sandy side and stay away from gold colors. If your eyes are blue or green and your hair is naturally blonde, go with a neutral or sandy blonde or opt for light brunette without a lot of warmth. And if your hair is naturally on the red side, keep the red subdued and don’t go too vibrant.

The wrong hair color can make you look tired, older, or even unhealthy. But the right cut and color can make you look younger and slimmer and can even appear to alter the shape of your face. Serratt maintains that a good colorist should be a friend for life, keeping you looking as young as possible, with color.

    Chemical Peels

Once the first choice for facial rejuvenation, chemical peels now play second fiddle to newer, less invasive techniques, but still have a significant role. Peels are used to treat wrinkles, age spots, discoloration, precancerous skin growths, and superficial scarring. An acid solution is applied to the skin, dissolving skin cells and removing the top layers of the epidermis. Just how deeply the peel penetrates, and the effects, vary depending on the strength of the solution used. Chemical peels can be done on the hands as well as the face.

For a superficial peel, doctors use alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, or salicylic acid, typically in mild 10% to 70% solutions, to remove only the outermost layer of the epidermis. This peel can improve skin tone, enhance texture, and somewhat minimize fine lines and wrinkles. You'll be happy with these peels if you have only mildly sun-damaged skin or just want to make your skin look brighter without a dramatic change in appearance. For best results, repeat the treatment monthly for about six months, and then quarterly. Superficial peels are often called lunchtime treatments because they take just 15–20 minutes, are painless, and don't require any recovery time. Some people with very fair or sensitive skin may have some redness for a few hours, but most people feel comfortable going out in public immediately afterward. Expect to pay about $75–$250 per treatment. You can also get similar results with microdermabrasion or its newer cousin, Vibraderm, for about the same price for a similar series of treatments. These methods physically sand away the very top skin layer, leaving the skin smoother and fresher.

If you have more advanced sun damage or if you want a more noticeable improvement to mild wrinkles, skin tone, and coloring, you may consider a stronger peel. These peels dissolve the skin into the top layer of dermis and require a longer recovery time. A solution of 35%- to 50%-strength trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is commonly used. You may find that it stings a bit. The session will last about 35 to 45 minutes. Afterward, you'll have mild discomfort, and a few days to a week after the treatment, the superficial skin will darken, turn stiff, and peel off. Your skin may appear flushed for several weeks, but you should not have other side effects. Most people report noticeable improvement in medium-depth lines and wrinkles and coloration. Results last up to two years, but many people get annual repeats before the improvements fade over time.

Deep peels use phenol, a caustic chemical, to penetrate into the dermis. These peels are used to reduce deeper wrinkles, to smooth out blotchy skin, and to improve sun-damaged areas. Because they may lighten skin, they are best reserved for people with fair skin. This procedure, which takes about an hour, is more painful than other peels and requires more healing. You'll need sedation during a phenol peel. Afterward, expect mild to severe discomfort and to wear dressings on your skin for a few days. You may not be able to eat solid food during this time and might need to enlist someone to help care for you. Once the dressings are removed, your skin will be red, swollen, and oozing. Then over the next few weeks, the skin will darken, flake, and peel. When the peeling subsides, the skin will appear bright red for two to three months. Usually only a single treatment is needed. But because of the often painful, slow healing process and the risk of unwanted color changes, phenol peels have fallen out of favor.

After any chemical peel, you'll be more sensitive to sun exposure, so take extra precautions when outdoors.

    Breast Augmentation Options

Women unsatisfied with the size and shape of their breasts can get saline or silicone breast implants — the kind you choose depends on your body type and desired results. However, implants aren't the only way to surgically improve the breasts.

Implants may be the first thing that comes to mind, but there are other ways to increase breast size. Learn the pros and cons of different procedures.

Medically reviewed by Niya Jones, MD, MPH

Many scenarios can lead a woman to consider breast augmentation (or augmentation mammoplasty). Common reasons include a desire for bigger breasts and reconstructive surgery after breast cancer.

Breast augmentation tops the list of popular plastic surgeries, with 347,524 breast augmentations performed in 2007.

    Choosing a Breast Augmentation Procedure

If you are looking into breast augmentation, first make sure your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has had experience performing a variety of breast augmentation procedures.

    Breast augmentation can:
    • Equalize the size of your breasts.
    • Counter changes due to aging, pregnancy, or weight loss.
    • Give you a larger breast size.
    • Reconstruct breasts after injury or cancer surgery.

Settling on the right breast augmentation surgery "is a decision a woman would need to make with her plastic surgeon," says David H. Song, MD, FACS, associate professor of surgery and chief of plastic surgery at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine. Discuss all possibilities with your surgeon before deciding on a procedure.

    Breast Augmentation: Breast Implant Options

Breast implants are filled with either saline (water) or silicone gel. Despite controversy linking silicone to many illnesses, including autoimmune disorders, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves its use in breast implants. Whether you choose a saline or silicone implant filler will depend, in part, on your body and the type of surgery your doctor has planned.

Breast implants are also available with different types of surfaces and sizes. There are textured and smooth implants, and sizes that range from small to very large. You and your plastic surgeon will discuss the right implant size and surface for you based on a number of factors, including your personal preferences and any medical conditions.

"Typically, the most important parameters are the base width of a woman’s breasts [and] the ultimate size she wants to be — within reason. Most surgeons pick a smooth implant, as this feels a bit softer and more natural," Dr. Song says.

The implant may be inserted under or over the pectoral muscle under the breast, depending on your surgeon’s recommendations.

    Plastic Surgery After Breast Cancer

When breast augmentation occurs after surgical removal of natural breast tissue, the breast surgery is called breast reconstruction.

The reconstructive approach you choose will depend on how much of your breast or breasts have been removed and how much time you are willing and able to spend recovering after surgery.

Implants are one option, but surgeons can also use a woman's abdominal fat to replace breast tissue through the creation of a Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP) flap.

The use of implants after breast cancer surgery "is not for everyone. Typically, implant reconstruction works well in thin patients who would [also] consider an augmentation [of the other breast]," or in patients who need reconstructive surgery on both breasts, Song says.

The DIEP flap procedure works well for women who have a moderate amount of abdominal fat, want their reconstructed breast to appear similar to their other breast, and do not mind a slightly longer recovery time. Song says that while implant surgery requires less recovery time than DIEP flap reconstruction, women with DIEP flap breast augmentation are less likely to require a surgical revision as their body changes.

    Breast Augmentation: Additional Considerations

"Patients need to understand that implants aren’t forever," Song says, noting that a patient will need a yearly follow-up with her surgeon and will probably need replacement implants at some point “during the course of her lifetime." And, like any surgical procedure, breast augmentation is not without risk.

Still, do your homework, choose your surgeon carefully, and you can have a successful breast augmentation. Many options are available; be sure to discuss them all with your surgeon so you can carefully arrive at the best plan (including the best choice of breast implants) for you.

Diseases That Could Affect Your Preteen or Teen

Know about 4 diseases that could affect your preteen or teen. Then learn how to help protect against them.

It’s that time of year again. And since it’s likely that your child will be visiting his or her doctor before school starts, now’s the time to ask about how to help prevent diseases that could affect your preteen or teen:

    Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
HPV is a virus that can cause cervical cancer and other HPV diseases. An estimated 8 out of 10 women will become infected with HPV in their lifetime. For most women the virus will clear on its own, but when certain types don’t clear, cervical cancer can develop. According to the American Cancer Society, about 30 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each day in the United States.

    Meningococcal Disease (Meningitis)
Meningitis is a very serious infection of the lining around the brain and spinal cord. It is characterized by fever, headache, and stiff neck. Infection can be spread from person to person by close contact. Complications can lead to loss of limbs, brain damage, kidney disease, loss of hearing, and even death.

    Pertussis (Whooping Cough)
Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection spread by coughing and sneezing. Pertussis in preteens or teens can range from mild to severe. Symptoms can include violent coughing, difficulty breathing, and vomiting. The infection often causes a lengthy illness that can lead to repeated doctor visits and missed school.

    Varicella (Chickenpox)
Chickenpox is caused by the varicella zoster virus. It usually produces fever and an itchy outbreak of blisters on the body. It is easily spread from person to person by coughing and sneezing. In serious cases, chickenpox may be complicated by bacterial infection of the skin, swelling of the brain, and pneumonia. Adolescents and adults are at greater risk for severe disease.

Clean Up Indoor Air with These Plants

Pick up these natural air allies from your local nursery: philodendrons, spider plants, and ivy.

They are just a few of the green friends that can help scrub harmful compounds from household air. Just one plant per 100 square feet of living space will help absorb volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

    The Problem with VOCs
VOCs are everywhere. Carpet, paint, foam insulation, household cleaners, air fresheners, and even cosmetics contain them. And, unfortunately, exposure to these toxins has been cited for causing fatigue, headaches, asthma, and allergies in certain people. Could your indoor air be poisoning you?

    In Memory Of My Friend.

This is a short story of losing a long time friend.
Aase and I met when we were 16, from that day till the fatal day of June 27 2009 when God took her to his side.
Aase had suffered with cancer and tried to fight but lost her strength to go on. I will miss her very much, the thing I am so grateful for is having 46 years with a great friend and sister.
I have our memories and they will always be in my heart.
Good bye my friend and may you find peace in his arms.
May God be kind to all our friends and family members who suffer with some kind of death threatening disease.

    Can Allergies Be Prevented?

Q: I've heard that allergies are becoming increasingly common among children. Why, and can anything be done to keep allergies from developing?

That's the million-dollar question in the field of allergy right now. Unfortunately, there is still no clear answer. While it's true that allergic conditions (including asthma) are on the rise, we can't really figure out how to prevent them without first understanding why they are increasing. Here are several theories, based on researchers' current best guesses:

    1. We aren't being exposed to enough "germs." Whether it's the result of more vaccinations or cleaner food and water supplies, children are no longer exposed to the series of childhood infections (measles, mumps, chicken pox, scarlet fever, diphtheria, diarrhea, parasites, skin infections, pneumonia, etc.) that they were in the past. And when they do get sick, medications are quickly used to reduce fever and stop the infection. One theory is that the medical advances we use today to prevent children from dying are also depriving the immune system of some important training. In other words, our bodies are not going through the full process of fighting and overcoming infections, and because of this, our immune systems are not "learning the lessons" they learned in the past. Part of the evidence for this theory is that the immune reactions of people with allergies are similar to those of newborn babies. They react strongly to everything, even harmless things like dust mites. Maybe our immune systems are not "learning" to distinguish dangerous disease-causing germs from harmless things in our environment, so we are remaining in an overly sensitive state, which leads to the development of allergic disease.

    2. The more time we spend indoors, the less we benefit from the sun. Exposure to the sun causes our skin to manufacture vitamin D, which is known to help cells of the immune system produce regulating signals that reduce allergic inflammation. So perhaps playing indoors and using sunscreen to prevent skin cancer have made it easier for children to develop allergies.

    3. A lack of physical activity, combined with excessive weight, may make it easier to develop allergic disease. Asthma, in particular, is made worse by obesity. People who do not exercise and become overweight or obese appear to be more susceptible to inflammation throughout the body. Allergic inflammation is just one form of this. It is not clear whether this susceptibility to inflammation is caused by hormonal changes, changes in the immune system, or a combination of factors.

    4. Various chemicals may be affecting the way our immune system functions. Researchers are looking at the effect that chemicals may be having, but there are few clear culprits. Chlorine-based cleaning products, for example, are not good for our respiratory systems and should not be heavily used indoors, especially if there is a person with asthma or allergies in the household.

Taken together, these theories seem to suggest that aspects of the way we live today may be contributing to the rise in allergies and asthma. While you shouldn't stop using modern medicines or sunscreen to protect your children from the sun (no one wants to return to the days when many children didn't survive their first years), there are some simple things you can do to raise your children's odds of avoiding allergies.

    * Don't treat every little fever. High fevers (above 102°F in a child between 3 months and 3 years, or above 104°F in older children) should be treated, but fevers lower than that can remain untreated if there's little discomfort and the child can sleep through it.
    * Avoid antibiotics if possible. This applies especially for common colds and routine infections, unless your doctor recommends them.
    * Spend time in the sun. Encourage your children to play outdoors, and safely expose them to natural sunlight.
    * Teach your children to enjoy physical activity. Turn off the TV (or better yet, get rid of it!) and go outside with them to set a good example.
    * Don't use chlorine-based cleaning products in your home. Generally, this includes bleach and related strong cleaners.
