Grow the Army of Women.

What's the study about?

The purpose of the study is to evaluate urinary markers and tumor markers in women with breast cancer to find out if these markers can be used to evaluate some potential therapies against breast cancer. It is also possible that these markers could help determine who would benefit from these potential new therapies.

What's involved?

If you agree to participate in the Urine and Tumor Markers Study, you will be asked to answer questions about your medical history, disease history, and cancer diagnosis. This will be completed during a telephone call with the research staff and/or during the study visit. Next, you will be asked to give the research team permission to contact your doctor or pathologist so that they can request a block of your paraffin-embedded tumor sample from your previous biopsy. Finally, you will need to go to The Methodist Hospital Research Institute in Houston, TX OR to Indiana University in Indianapolis, IN, and provide a urine sample. You will need to stop taking aspirin for at least 7 days and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for at least 2 days before providing the urine sample.

The researchers need to enroll up to 121 women with breast cancer of any stage, including metastatic disease, in this study.

Who is conducting the study?

Edgardo Rivera, MD, at The Methodist Hospital Research Institute, Houston, Texas, and Bryan Schneider, MD, at Indiana University, Indianapolis, Indiana

Where?

Houston, TX and Indianapolis, IN

Who can participate?

You can join the Urine and Tumor Markers Study if you match ALL of these MAIN categories:

• You are a woman 18 years of age or older

• You have been diagnosed with breast cancer of any stage, including metastatic disease. Your diagnosis can be a recurrence. Inflammatory breast cancer is allowed.

• You have NOT yet had surgery

• You know the hormonal (receptor) status of your breast cancer

• You live near or are willing to travel to The Methodist Hospital Research Institute in Houston, Texas, OR Indiana University in Indianapolis, Indiana

• You are willing and able to stop taking aspirin for at least 7 days before providing your urine sample

• You are willing and able to stop taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for at least 2 days before providing your urine sample

• A previous tumor biopsy is available and can be obtained by the research staff

After you RSVP, the researcher will ask you additional questions to be sure that this study is the right fit for you.
